I Thought We Were Building the Same Business. We Weren’t.

When Business Partners Want the Same Role—but Different Futures

It’s not skill or effort that breaks most business partnerships. It’s ambition.

I learned this the hard way. I once had a business partner where, on paper, it should have worked perfectly—we both had drive, intelligence, and a shared vision of success. But we both wanted to do the same things, and neither of us wanted to do others. Worse, our ambitions, though unspoken at first, were totally misaligned. One of us wanted to build and sell, the other wanted to grow and lead long-term.

It ended badly. Not because we didn’t work hard or respect each other’s talents—but because we never had the right conversation early enough.

In any partnership, it’s easy to accept that each person brings different strengths. We make allowances for that. We even expect it. But few people talk about what they want—really want—from the business and their role in it. Growth has a way of exposing those differences. So does pressure.

That’s why dialogue is essential—but self-awareness has to come first. You can’t be honest with your partner if you’re not honest with yourself.

What do you want from the business? What are you prepared to sacrifice—and what’s non-negotiable?

Before you sit down with your partner, sit down with yourself. Better yet, seek a mentor. Someone outside the business who can help you clarify your goals and maybe even help broker the conversation you need to have.

Your business may depend on it. Your peace of mind definitely does.
