I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Sanjai Mehta for his Success Matters podcast, and I want to share our conversation with you.
We explored some questions I’ve been wrestling with throughout my career: What does it really mean to find purpose in our work? How can we help others less lucky than ourselves? And how do you know you’re doing well?
Here are three themes we dug into:
Purpose Beyond Profit
I shared how my journey started with a beat-up old van and a paper recycling idea, but evolved into something much bigger, a mission to create real jobs for people who society had given up on. We talked honestly about why profit alone has never been enough motivation for me, and what happens when you anchor your work to something deeper.
Lift as You Climb
From employing people straight out of prison to giving the long-term unemployed a real second chance, I’ve learned that creating opportunities for others isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s hugely rewarding. Sometimes all it takes is someone saying “yes, you can have this job” to completely rewrite a person’s story.
Redefining Success
Early in my career, success meant tonnage and profit margins. But I soon realised that true success is measured by the people we help. Watching someone who once felt hopeless become confident and thriving, that’s where the real magic happens.
